An Approach to Tonal Realism: Workshop
11 & 12 July, 10am-4pm
Tim Murphy
This workshop explores methods inspired by the Australian Tonalists (where patterns of light and dark are favoured over underdrawing) and is intended to give participants a grounding or an opportunity to advance skills in oil painting based on direct observation.
Held over two days, day one will focus on techniques for measuring and plotting, observing tonal shapes and establishing a hierarchy of edges. Day two will include a study of colour temperature and how to apply colour according to tonal order.
Participants can expect to gain an understanding of how to approach tonal painting logically, and it is hoped this knowledge can be used as a reference for further studies. The workshop also provides an opportunity to complete a finished work. All skill levels are welcome.

Creating Seascapes.
Sunday 30 August - 10.00am - 4.00pm
Peter Smales
• composition – the basic principles and strategies that can be applied to any painting subject and should be considered before starting; and
• simplified colour mixing – a basic artist’s palette requires only six colours, ie. warm and cool of the three primary colours and white. I will demonstrate how any colour and tone value can be mixed using these six basic colours.
Students may copy Peter's painting or work from a photo of their own. Peter will be assisting each student individually as they put into practice the aspects we covered in the morning demonstration.
If time permits, later in the afternoon Peter will be doing a second demonstration of a still life subject from life.
All welcome – beginner to advanced –bring their own painting kit, easel and tables are available in the studio. A suggested materials list is issued on booking.
