President’s Welcome to the Brighton Art Society

Brian Pleasants
President
You have elected to become a member of the Brighton Art Society and on behalf of the committee we welcome you. It is always a pleasure to see a new face in our studio. We hope you will soon be fully integrated into the friendship of established members as you seek to expand your expertise and skill in your chosen area of artistic expression.  We are sure that you will soon become aware that BAS offers you the opportunity to learn new skills and a better understanding of the many different avenues that you can explore in order to express yourself more fully. In addition to the nine tutored sessions there are five periods every week that have  programs organized by different conveners and you can just attend a session or not as you choose; there are no term charges for these and you just have to share the model costs.

Throughout the year; demonstrations, workshops and lectures take place.  These are designed to make you aware of new methods of working and expanding your knowledge in general about the wonderful world of art.  When weather permits we also organize ‘paint-outs’ that enable you to work alongside your fellow member and join in the fun and excitement or working in the open away from the studio. The Brighton Art Society is very fortunate to have available such a magnificent studio.  We are not aware of better surroundings in and around Melbourne .   We are also fortunate to have such an enthusiastic and competent committee to ensure that our 220 members derive maximum benefit from their working environment and working conditions.  I would like to introduce them to you.

Ann Black organizes our annual exhibition, the highlight of our year’s efforts. Barbara Allen does splendid work organizing the program content. Jan Guiney is our first class Committee Secretary and Robyn Underwood is Office Manager and looks after everything from dustbins to the kitchen cupboard. Linda Himmelfarb runs our library area.  Fred Allen is our Treasurer and keeps the finances in good order as well as monitoring membership.  Rod Edelsten is responsible for organizing the schedule for visiting speakers and demonstrators. Steve Brown fixes anything that needs to be fixed and provides technical advice.  Laurie Dacy produces our excellent newsletter Panorama, a big task each month. Me?  I don’t do very much as the committee does everything so well.

The main social events of the year are the Casserole Night in July, the AGM in October and the Annual Exhibition in November. Also very popular is the annual ‘appraisal night’ when Colin Johnson spends a couple of hours offering constructive comments about member’s work.

You are urged to attend the AGM. We try to complete the business as quickly as possible then spend the rest of the afternoon socializing with some form of interest or entertainment.  You will also have the opportunity to meet fellow artists outside your own group and also representatives of the committee; who are of course dedicated to ensuring you derive maximum benefit from your membership.

I hope to meet you personally soon,

Brian Pleasants

President.
